Vacuum Excavation

What is Vacuum Excavation?

Vacuum excavation is non-destructive digging that removes loosened soil with a powerful vacuum, using either high-pressure water (hydro excavation) or compressed air (air excavation) to break up the ground first.

Vacuum excavation is the umbrella term for digging methods that suction spoils into an onboard tank rather than lifting them with a bucket. The two main variants are hydro excavation, which uses pressurized water, and air excavation, which uses an air lance; both rely on a high-CFM vacuum and a debris body to collect material.

The technique is prized for exposing utilities safely, minimizing surface disruption, and enabling precise excavations like slot trenches and potholes. Equipment ranges from hydrovac trucks and trailers to combination trucks and air vacuum units.
