Non-Destructive Digging
What is Non-Destructive Digging?
Non-destructive digging (NDD) is any excavation method that exposes buried utilities without mechanical cutting tools, most commonly hydro or air vacuum excavation, greatly reducing the risk of line strikes.
Non-destructive digging uses pressurized water or compressed air to loosen soil and a vacuum to remove it, so buried pipes and cables are uncovered intact. Because no auger, blade, or backhoe bucket contacts the utility, NDD is the safest way to dig in congested underground corridors.
NDD is often required by utility owners and specified in permits for work near gas, electric, and fiber lines. It underpins daylighting, potholing, and pipeline exposure. The equipment is typically a hydrovac truck or trailer, or an air vacuum truck.
